The streetfighter 1098s came stock with a dry clutch i believe. Though i think they still melt their gas tanks like the 848s.

yep, all big bored ducatis up until the release of the panigale line had dry clutches.

why would you want a dry clutch in a motorcycle?

same reasons you’d want one on a car. less power loose, better grip from the clutch with the same springs, etc etc.
BMW also has a dry clutch on the R motors. and actually, on the older R1150 engine, you could use an original VW beetle clutch on it!
the performance / usability really isnt that bad. ridden on, its perfectly fine, if a bit heavy on the friction plates. oh well, its not like they are particularly hard or expensive to replace.
also, by not having the clutch shed material into the oil, the oil change intervals are longer as well.

if you’re “loosing” power through any clutch- whether wet or dry- it’s worn out and needs replacing.

Except so much of maneuvering motorcycles at low speeds depends on slipping the clutch, and slipping a dry clutch is a great way to murder it in short order.

wet clutches always lost a little pit of power. not always through the oil slipping, but in the energy waster spinning in the oil. (it really was a minuscule amount, hence why they went to a wet clutch in the pani)

i always ask guys on dry clutchs if they could spare some change, then point to the clutch. gets a laugh out of them

And the removal of said dry clutches has always been a sore point for me. Big Ducatis need to rattle, end of story.

Well, i think the combination of ObamaGas (high ethanol), plastic tanks, and the heat given off by the bike led to the problem.
